no GPL libs for lift

There is an interesting discussion going on the lift mailing list.

The principal maintainer, David Pollak, doesn’t want to abide by the FSF and add GPL or LGPL code to his code base.

Well, I kinda agree.

In terms of freedom, having to redistribute your source code when using one of those libraries is actually reducing your freedom.

Maybe the ultimate DRM ?

You didn’t get it : GPL and alike are not about developper’s freedom but user’s freedom.

It’s not reducing your freedom — you are free to NOT implement new features by use of GPL/LGPL code. It’s an explicit trade. Say I wrote the GPL software in question.
You may use my code, for whatever purposes you like, in exchange that I (or anyone else) can use your code.

Don’t like it? Then don’t use the work contributed by the Free Software Community as GPL & LGPL licensed work. Write the code yourself and maintain it yourself (and by extension, pay for it yourself).
